My Lord

Having been informed that Sir Joseph Banks has sent to your Lordship his protest against the reward voted to me by the Board of Longitude, I have as a matter of self defence, presumed to trouble your Lordship with my answer thereto; and as the subject of the protest is of great National concern I have no doubt your Lordship will give the inclosed your perusal.

I am
My Lord
Your Lordships most obed't. [obedient] servant

Tho's [Thomas] Earnshaw
