I am sorry I could not do myself the honour of attending you yesterday, it was rather late before I returned from Woolwich and after that I had a fruitless enquiry after the controller of the Navy to whom I had a Message to deliver from the builder of Woolwich yard respecting the fiting [fitting] of the Chatham. It is with the utmost regret I feel myself under the necessity of acquainting you that I must decline the Command of His Majesty Brig. Chatham. Several weighty reasons induces me to adopt this resolution the principal of which is my present state of health. Since my Annual in the King George I have found it much impaird and mean if I can obtain permission of my Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty after my present ship is paid off to quit the Kingdom for a twelve month to try to reastablish [re-establish] my health and
