This country county abounds with ruins of the Romans, dismantled abbeys, & old Norman Castles and old churches which standing like blocks of solid stone amidst that lift their quaint spires & steeples above the tombstones that register the virtues of many generations. Many Numerous battes, in ages for long since passed, have been fought around the site of the Australian encampments. Here Alfred the Great with his Saxons defeated the Danish the Danes  The remains of the fortifications erected thrown up by Roman Generals in the times when they occupied the descendents of ROMULUS ruled Britain can still be traced. Here too are the many battlefields on which Alfred the Great with his redoubtable Saxons secured
