Dear Sir, 

My not writing to you till after my Return to England when You had given me your kind Commands on my setting out on my Travels, demands some Apology & I can only excuse myself in not communicating to You any Discoveries I have made in Natural History, in knowing you were informed of them by our worthy Friend Broussonet.  We have for some time past travelled together the same Road, with the same Views & from similar Pursuits have made very similar Collections.  Before my leaving England having examined the greater part of our indigenous Plants in their natural Situation, I flattered myself the Radcliffe Appointment would give me an Opportunity of seeing most of the extra Britannick Plants growing spontaneously in Europe;  & that some future Day I might publish either a new Edition of the "Synopsis Stirpium extra Britannicum Sponte Nascentium" of Mr. Ray, or a work on a similar model.  With that View I have taken every Opportunity of seeing the Habitats of European Plants, & have brought Home with me a considerable Collection made in
