Sir,
The love of natural philosophy for which you have got so great merits, gives me courrage, to trouble you with a letter. In the study of natural philosophy i was imployed from my tender youth and my most ardent wish is, to give myself entirely up to it. Now there is a favorable opportunity, an expedition being taken upon the expenses of the king under your direction, in order to enquir the natural products of New Holland. Being my positive resolution, to take this voyage also, if i shall receive permission and supports for it, i came to you with the desire, to procure me both; in the mean time, not being acquainted for an author, i must for all things give you a true picture of me and of the qualities, which, according to my opinion, make me able for it.
