&parade ground & the work is complimented by Orderly Officer. At this until 12 noon. Afternoon off (Sat.) & having a leave pass (my first in camp) visit Etaples. It is a dirty little town, all side streets & small. Do some shopping with Sgt. David & return to camp. Cold night. Expenses:- P/cs 2fr.60, Supper 3fr.40 = 6Frs. Very little occurred at the front.

Oct. 22nd – Sunday
Another bitterly cold night. Heavy frost. Parade 6-30 a.m. & after breakfast, fall in for church parade at 8-30 a.m. I have charge of R.C. parade of 28 men & march in (with other units) to the Church in Etaples. Mass at 9-30 a.m. & a fine sermon
