All your letters have been safely receivd. The last two of the date Octr 18th came to hand on the 10th of January.

Your accounts appear correct & I have no doubt are so, your Salary commences on the 4th of Octr. I shall of course begin to remit the Allowance you have allotted to your Mother when I next receive a letter from you.

You say in your last that the Corn called Dura is the Tea Mays of Linnaeus pray enquire more particularly into that matter, the Botanists who have visited Egypt before you consider Dura as the generic name for several species of Holcus.

The Commee [Committee] as well as myself are well contented with your conduct & the alacrity you have shewn in proceeding diligently to the place of your destination, they wish you to remain quietly where you are & by no means to move till you have attaind a fluency in the Arabic Language & a competent knowledge of the Customs of the Megrabins &c. They are well aware that a detention even of considerable length in the place where you now are, is likely to facilitate very much the ultimate object of your Mission.

They do not complain of your having forgot the advice you so frequently received against connecting yourself in any shape with Baldwin or Rozetti but they are seriously
