Thurs 17th
Yesterday Major Smith, Cpl Biggs & 4 men went for a long ride through all the native villages around here to see if the roads are good enough for the transports to travel over. They received a warm welcome by the natives everywhere, & they could not do enough for them feeding both horses & men at every village they visited, & the Egyptian land owners all gave pressing invitation to stop for supper saying they would have a banquet in their honor; About 2 oclock this morning several natives from this village came to see the colonel , they said they wanted to get their women-folk away as they were afraid of an attack being made here, but they went away satisfied when told that they were quite safe in the village;
