sending shells over our heads but exactly where it lay we didn't know.
The Germans had been sending over a lot of shells during the morning and as they
always make a target of where they think a trench mortar is placed, so they started to
land them round this trench mortar. Minnies, shrapnel, and shells from Howitzers burst
all round us. It was hell. We couldn't get out because the way we came in was blown
