On our left is the famous Messines Ridge and a white patch of, what looks alike the floor of a quarry, which is all that is left of the village of Messines.                          The ground is pitted with shell holes, and here and there an outpost, or rather observation post, some camouflaged as trees.                          There is one large crater caused by the great explosion we can see
