Wed. 2nd. I believe the blowing up at Quinns Post was quite a success last night & things were fairly lively for a while. At 9.30 a.m. the 3rd L.H. came in to take our place & we were moved further up Popes Hill. One of the 3rd L.H. officers was shot dead (hit through the eye) while taking over the position. Last night just before dark a New Zealand er Engineer, who has done good work here & received a D.C.M. a couple of days ago, was sitting by our trenches smoking when one of the Japanese bombs was fired on Quinns Post & a piece of the shell came across cutting the Engineers throat & he bled to death in a few moments.
