coming & going from the trenches as our 1st Brigade was being relieved after its spell in the line.

Although it was dark we could now see something of the real ravages of war – The crops had been put in but the farm houses were chiefly ruins walls blown in, roofs burnt holes in the road from shells roughly filled in, we couldn't see these but felt them as we passed over with the waggons.
