yards from the wharf so we didn't get much chance of seeing Marseilles, but what I did see was ridiculously French

The only policeman was short & stout with a pair of gigantic buffalo horn moustaches The soldiers guarding the wharves etc. were the old French Territorials dressed in the out of date dark blue coats & baggy red trousers just like the stage type French soldier of pre-Entente days

It was 4.30 in the afternoon when the train started on what was to be a 48 hour Railway journey across France a journey I will always remember with pleasure. It was just like one long scenic Cinema Film. The majority of our fellows had never seen any old fashioned
