standing 5 feet high. Tremendous shell & mine craters alround & the line of the German Trenches almost indistinguishable. It seems impossible to have lived through such an upheaval. Although all the German Dead had been put into shell holes & covered over – yet the smell was very bad.

Watched two anti aircraft guns firing at a Taube & they got it. Must have hit the petrol tank for it caught fire & came down looking somewhat like a falling rocket or shot pigeon. Fell I believe just outside our present
