Oct 6 (Saturday) Dickebush
have been up here the last 4 days & am kept taking up the rations to our advanced headquarters in Ypres. it must have been a beautiful old town but now after three years of artillery fire is just a mass of debris.

I pass through the Lille Gate and between the solid old ramparts of the town which still stand though bearing the marks of many shells & across the moat upon which I noticed swimming serenely amidst all the noise of traffic & of our guns – two swans swim
