The High Sea Fleet was compelled to retire to the Keil after losing 18 ships Whether these were sunk by the cruisers or our main Fleet is not at present known but the latter is regarded as most probable. The "New Zealand" was in the thick of the fight on May 18th. The "Australia" is thought to have taken part in the action.
At the conclusion of Proclamation the band played Patriotic airs amid the vociferous cheers of the troops.
