WEDNESDAY - 17TH FEBY. 15:
The S.S. "Eastern" arrived this morning from Rabaul, having on board Captain MacDowell and Lieut. Bruce, 98 Infantry and 65 Naval Reserves. The majority of these men are convalescents.
After the troops were examined medically by an Officer of the Department of Health, and their belongings inspected by Customs Officails, the "Eastern" berthed at the E. & A. Coy's Wharf at Circular Quay, where the men were disembarked and conveyed to Naval Depot and Victoria Barracks respectively by tram. Eleven malarial patients were admitted to Hospital on arrival.
At Victoria Barracks the men were provided with mid-day meal and granted an advance of £2 each on their pay, and after collecting arms and equipment the men were dismissed and directed to report at Barracks on Friday, 26th inst., in reference to final payment and discharge.
Three members of the 3rd. Tropical Battalion under Lieut. North were also invalided to Australia by the "Eastern".
