MONDAY - 21ST DECEMBER 1914:
The "Lorengou" returned from the Hermit and Admiralty Islands. The mission on which she was sent (referred to in diary of 5th Dec.) was not altogether successful, as the letter in question from Herr Ehemann of the Hamburgische Sudsee Coy. was written prior to his taking the oath of neutrality.
The "Eastern" left at 4-0 p.m. with Colonel Pethebridge on board. Major Heritage accompanied Colonel Pethebridge, representing the Administrator. The Garrisons for the relief of Kaiwieng, Lorengou, and Nauru are on board. The "Eastern" will not be escorted, owing to the "Una's" engines requiring a complete overhaul. H.M.S. "Fantome" will act as connecting link by wireless, and will leave Simpsonhafen at 6-0 p.m. on Wednesday, 23rd.
The distribution of the relief garrisons will be as shown on the attached list.
A message was received from the "Eastern" at 6-0 p.m. stating that an Officer has not been detailed for the garrison at the Admiralty Islands (Manus). Captain Bell will proceed to Manus in the "Una" when this ship is ready for sea.
