NUMBER OF CHINESE AT BENDIGO, PROPOSE TO BUILD A CHURCH, 1854.
An application has been made by the Chinese to the Government through a number of influential men among whom Mr. E.N. Emmett, takes a part, for suitable site for a Protestant Church in this Township. Mr Emmett has ascertained that the number at present on Bendigo is between three & four thousand.

Those who are in the habit of perambulating the streets of Sandhurst cannot but observe the adoption, of late, by certain gold brokers and others, of Chinese characters, to signify their calling

This gully is alive again with men, and presents an appearance very similar to that which it did at its opening - The greater proportion of the diggers are Chinamen, of whom, we should imagine, there must be above a thousand located here. Their earnings are about 3 dwts say twelve shillings a day per man -
About the Centre of Eagle Hawk there is a specimen of a very primitive attempt at propelling a puddling machine with sails, the idea seems not to be a bad one, & might be improved upon considerably.
Ever since the subsidence of the first grand rushes, people have found employment in washing the refuse of the early diggers, & now it
covered with Chinese, all of whom are obtaining,
at least a livelihood, by working the same stuff over again. When will they have done with it, & how much will they leave behind them -
