BRITISH ADMINISTRATION - GERMAN NEW GUINEA:
Rabaul,
New Britain,
5th January 1915.
The Honorable,
The Minister of State for Defence,
Melbourne:
In my despatch of the 29th ultimo, I mentioned the fact that No. 20 Pte. James Samuel Gray of 'A' Company, Tropical Unit, was seriously ill in hospital suffering from pulmonary tuberculosis. I have now to advise that this man committed suicide yesterday by cutting his throat.
In the opinion of Captain H.H. Field-Martell, A.A.M.C., who saw Gray a little while before the act was committed, he would only have lived a few hours longer.
I understand he has no relatives, but that he left a will devising his property to the London Hospital.
(Sgd.) William Holmes, Colonel
Administrator.
