My dear Sir William

I had the pleasure of your letter of the 16th inst. and I am truly glad to find that your health is so much improved.

Regarding the Merinos which you very properly wish to be of even quality I fear I could not (till the fleece grows a good length) be able to select them of as uniform quality as you might wish.  Would you like long strong heavy fleeces, or long fine open soft wool, or fine short close clothing staple.  I have been leaning towards weight of fleece, without ignoring fineness.  My experience is that the long is generally open, and the close rather short.  What ages
