My dear Sir William,

Though I have really nothing to write about, I think it is such a long time since we have exchanged notes that I am induced to pen a few lines, as I know you take an interest in me and mine as I cannot fail doing taking in you and your connections.

My son Allan returned form Europe about 6 months ago, having taken his degree at Oxford;  passed at the Bar;  and saw a good deal of the German & French war.  He has
