and about 9½ inches fall in 3 days, it flooded the country for miles.  I rode through a slow running stream on the level plains 3½ miles broad, but not more than 18 inches deep.  Dams which I made 4 years ago, & never filled before were carried away;  and now 5 months afterwards swamps are full of water, in which I never saw water before.  In fact I may say that about one third of my country was under water, but you know
