My Dear Sir William,

Your very kind letter of May last I duly received.  I need scarcely say that it was gratifying to me to know that one whom I loved and respected so much as your dear late Brother had such a good opinion of me.  In truth I may say that I know no one whose opinion I would value more.  I have a grateful remembrance of the visit you and He made to Richlands soon after I was entrusted with the management of your affairs there - when I was inexperienced and when my predecessor prejudiced
