Johnson recommend retaining Sir Hugh Cairns, and in the first place taking his opinion before more than the preliminary steps are taken.  They estimate the cost of the appeal to be about £500.  When you have the first opportunity I wish you would obtain Sir Wm. Mannings views on the prudence of my carrying out the appeal, and also see Mr. Johnson about it.  I saw Mr. [Darvall?] at the Club here on his way to England, and he thought that I ought to get the best opinion before I went for
