the cattle only about half the estimated number.  I would draw your attention to the following fact - that in all the Rivers of Australia I found that the nearer their source the richer the soil and the heavier the grasses, and that the lower they descended the poorer & thinner the country became, until on the banks of the lower Murray near Adelaide it becomes little better than a desert.  At the same time I observed that the stock fattened well and were healthy on the poorer pastures, but they required a large scope of country, and their fleeces were very deficient.
