My dear Friend

Your last letter of the 30th of August reached me in due course & two days after your letter of the 24th per Whampoa came to hand.  What wonderful passages these fine lean steamers now make.  I wish that I could report upon the Case of plants sent by this Boat, but unfortunately my friend Lincoln has not yet been able to get possession of it.  A thousand thanks for it, it contains just the things I want & I can but trust that they will come to hand in good condition.  I have read over all your "paranoia} in re Veitch, I confess that while sorry for the [indecipherable] you have met with

Sir W. Macarthur, etc. etc. etc.
