My dear old Friend

Have to acknowledge your letters of Jany. & even particularly so I thank you for your last communication about poor Guildford Onslows death.   The wording is precise & have assumed an infinite amount of sorrow that was about apparently to weigh down the Onslow girls.  As to Arthur Onslow himself none of the letters had been shown to him and he believes what he was told that his Son's death had followed on the ordinary course of broken health.  He has consequently borne the intelligence with [indecipherable] equanimity than we would have expected.

[In left margin]
left for me but to say that I will soon write you a much more decent letter while I am in the meantime as an yr. [indecipherable] old friend,

Geo: Macleay

Have seen nothing of Veitch for a long time.  I must go & see him.
