You ask how it is that I am doing Anchorites at this season of gaiety - in good faith I cannot answer.  I have asked the question of myself and been unable to assign a satisfactory reason - with Sam Weller, I asked myself whether I was "labouring under an unrequited attachment to a young woman" but received a prompt answer in the negative.  I then demanded of Monsieur Conscience whether I grudged the expenses -  no that was not it - for as I had determined
