They are all extremely hospitable, and what little they are able to do for us they do willingly and smilingly and refuse any remuneration whatsoever.
I have always admired the French spirit and I admire their it more so now.
On entering a town the Germans walked into the houses from the richest to the poorest, commandeered the best rooms and usually allotted two and often only one room for the whole family to live in. They then forced the people to wait on them like slaves.
Before leaving, the germans requisitioned furniture clothing and bedding from the inhabitants for which a receipt was given.
