Officer Commanding 1/6th Gurkhas and this, assisted by the artillery, retook the left trench, killing all the enemy in it and forcing them to abandon the fortified post.  Considering the small numbers engaged the enemy's losses were very heavy, some 200 bodies being counted in front of our line.  16 prisoners were taken.  Our casualties were 2 officres killed, 2 wounded, other ranks 44 killed, 84 wounded, and 14 missing.

On 24th May, Major- General A..G. Hunter Weston, C.B., D.S.O., Commanding the 29th Division, assumed command for tactical purposes of three divisions, the 29th, 42nd and Royal Naval Divisions.  In accordance with instructions from your Lordship the VIIIth Army Corps was subsequently formed of the 29th and 42nd (East Lancashire) Divisions, under the command of Major-General (temporary Lieutenant-General) A.G. Hunter Weston, C.B., D.S.O.  To this Corps the Royal Naval Divisiion was temporarily atttached.
