into the bush on both sides of the road.  At once every man fired off his rifle into the running blacks with the result that 18 dead were found the morning after.  One of the German officers attempting to rush into the bush was shot dead.  During this time many shots were fired into us from the bush presumably from the natives who had been told off for ambushing us from the sides of the road. They had been able to get close to us as there was no flank guard out.  None of the section was hurt but three seamen were wounded from the firing one of them dying shortly after.

Capt Travers, Lieut Bond & Lieut Kempf (a German prisoner) taking with them Private Eitel of the M.G.S. as interpreter left for the wireless station at 5.30 p.m. leaving the M.G.S. a party of 15 seamen & 3 officers prisoners in charge of the M.G.S. commander.  The guns were mounted & all precautions taken against surprise.  They
