NAURU or PLEASANT ISLAND

A coral Island close to the Equator which is included in the Marshall Islands, and has a wireless station.

It is some 12 miles in circumference.

Population - White - in 1905 17 whites; the native population is small; in the whole of the Marshall Islands there are 15,000 natives

[Note in Margin] Mr. Whittle 1910 about 70 whites

Supplies and water - Scarce.

Climate - Hot and very damp and trying for Europeans owing to its heat and dampness.

Distances - Rabaul to Nauru - 750 miles air line.

Yap to Nauru - 1,500 miles.

Armed force - in the whole of the Marshall islands there are 39 native police under white command.
