however to throw out my raincoat. I came down a beautiful crash on to the line opposite, tore my great coat badly and almost ruined my best breeches. In addition I was badly shaken and my left wrist was stiff and sore for some days afterwards having taken a great deal of the weight as I fell forward. It was a most ridiculous thing to do as any of us might easily have broken our necks. We picked up our kits and trudged across a field to the main road where we caught a train into Boulogne and stayed the night at the officers
