25th February, 1919.

Dear Sir,

Representations have bee made to me from influential quarters, with respect to the fine record of, and the brilliant services rendered in the War by, Lieutenant-Colonel D. G. Marks, D.S.O., M.C.  A brief statement of such record and performances is attached for your perusal.

I also forward, herewith, copy of the correspondence referred to, which will give abundant evidence of the high regard in which he was held by the distinguished Military Commanders with whom he was associated throughout such service.

I feel confident that, upon the facts being properly presented to them, the Defence Department will realise that this is a case of unusual and very substantial merit, and that it is one in which some special recognition of highly meritorious service should be generously accorded.

In these circumstances I feel justified in expressing the strong hope that some definite steps should be taken at an early date to adequately recognise Colonel Marks's services, and that an appointment will be conferred upon him which would fully meet the case and give an opportunity for exercise of the undoubted talents which he has displayed.

If it be found that a satisfactory staff position be not available at present, I should be glad to learn whether it is not possible to arrange for Colonel Marks to be dispatched to London to assist in the difficult work of the repatriation of the Australian troops.

Yours faithfully,

Premier.

The Honorable
The Acting Prime Minister of
The Commonwealth of Australia,
MELBOURNE.
