[Ash Wednesday 8 March 1916]

This Canal must not be confused with SUEZ
We were startled today by seeing the body of a dead Soldier floating down the Canal- He turned out to be a Queenslander 2nd L.H. drowned 3 days before higher up the Canal.
A sad end for a fighting man  €“ it appears his [horse?] fell off one of the Ferries & being weighted with Rifle & ammunition had no chance-
We wired for Motor Ambulance & sent him to Minna for decent burial.
Poor old Sef Bey's brother died last night- much wailing in the village just like our Aboriginals. He was attended by native Doctor who told us this morning "That he died accidental
