My dear Syd
(Brother, on his arrival in England)
Thanks very much for your letter of 7th which I was very pleased to receive. I have been anxiously awaiting word from you and, as you suggest, I was wondering why you had not written before. However now I am glad to learn that you are quite O.K. and that you had such a pleasant & interesting trip over. You were very fortunate to be granted such liberal leave at Freemantle [Fremantle] Durban & Cape Town. It is rather a pity that you were forbidden to go ashore at Sierra Leone as no doubt a look around there would have been interesting.
I'm very glad to hear that you like soldiering as far as you have experienced it and I trust that you will retain all your enthusiasm right through.
You ask me if there is a chance of me claiming you and obtaining a transfer for your pal. This I shall most certainly do but not to this Battery as that would hardly be sound. Being in my Battery might easily prejudice or embarass you but I will get you into this Brigade and also most probably obtain a transfer for your pal to the same Battery as yourself. Of course whilst you are over there
