My dear Pater
Following on my remarks yesterday there are a couple of little commissions I wish that you would execute on my behalf. The first is to buy the Mater a present on the occasion of her birthday. I know I am fearfully late this year but it isnt that. I forgot all about it. At the time I should have written to catch the proper mail I was not in a position to do so. But better late than never & I want you to write off £5 on this account. Again I want you to hand young Bob 10/- to have a beano in commemoration of 5th Aug.
Again and not the least important - I became engaged yesterday! Sounds funny doesnt it. At least it does to me. Putting it in so many words sounds strange & peculiar to me but there it is. Now I want you to fix up the matter of a ring for Ida. Ive never been engaged before so am grossly ignorant of engagement rings. In fact to be quite honest I dont know an engagement ring from a wedding ring or any other sort of ring except a prize ring. I dont even know how many stones it should have though I believe they should be diamonds. Now if you dont know any more than I do about it (you cant know less) will you please get particulars and take Ida along and let her pick out just what she wants. Now I am aware that an engagement ring is an important item to a girl and I want her to have the best she can find within reason. I am ignorant of the price
