They thought then that the Turks were winning and so as our men came back they helped the turk and gave our men a very rough time. The NZ's had sworn that if ever they got out there again they would wipe the whole lot out and so the Sacassions must have rather expected this and thinking discression the better part of valour, had flown with the turks. However the inhabitants of Zerka seemed quite neutral, now that we were winning and they warned us to be careful of a tribe of arabs about there, who were supposed to be very fierce and had just equipped themselves with captured abandoned turkish rifles and ammunition. These arabs really were on our side and
